July 2009 - Safety Idiot Of The Month

This "Absolute Shocker" is yet another example of making it up as you go along.

The reader who submitted this photo wrote, he "went up in [an elevating work platform] EWP, no harness, then climed out of the basket across to ladder and then up ladder. He used the harness while removing the radio aerial then reversed procedure - not one by twice."

If your boom- type EWP cannot reach the required height, get one that does or use another method which provides the same level of falls protection such as a crane with a man box.

Also, operators working in boom-type EWPs must wear an anchored safety harness at all times and never climb out of the basket.

Before you start a job, plan it with safety in mind.
