A Safety Soapbox subscriber sent in this photo of workers building an awning at this renovation site.

Some of the safety problems with this scaffold include:

  • Now safe ladder access to the working deck
  • No fall protection (guardrails, midrails and toeboards)
  • Being constructed on an angle and not properly levelled

Not the use of timber saw-horses in a dangerous manner to help get that little bit of extra height.
Appropriate, compatible and sufficient are three key requirements in scaffold safety.

The Groucho brothers never fail to amaze, especially when it comes to their inventiveness. I mean, who else would so dangerously utilise a EWP as a component of a truly Bodgey Scaffold?

As the image below shows, our intrepid pair are almost four meters off the ground, perched out on an interesting pine and particleboard work platform.

We'd offer the suggestion that a properly designed and erected scaffold or even the correct type of EWP would have eliminated the risks. But then again, they are the Groucho family...
