Maybe the worker in this week's Absolute Shocker was hoping that his trousers would camouflage him during this dangerous operation.

Unfortunately he was spotted by one of our eagle-eyed readers who took this photo.

One slip and he would join the statistics of people who have been killed or seriously injured after falling off a forklift pallet.

Work at height requires access equipment suitable for the task. In this case, a forklift is not the right solution.

If you are using a forklift to lift a person, a purpose-designed man-box physically secured to the forklift is required. The operator must be at the forklift controls at all times. Both the forklift and the man-box must also meet relevant safety standards.

Due to the cluttered and restrictive work area, the operator of this gantry crane is putting himself at rist by standing under the suspended load. It is essential that sufficiently clear space is maintained so that the operator can stand outside the operating envelope of the crane.

Safety can also be improved for the operator by him wearing a safety helmet and protective eyewear.

Employers should ensure standard operating procedures are in place that:
- Prevent people from travelling or working under suspended loads
- Ensure that the suspeneded load is whithin the Working Load Limit of the crane
- Checks that the load is properly secured
