September 2008 - Safety Idiot Of The Month

Looking at the column in photo A above, the worker is not only exposed to a 2 metre fall off to the left side, he will miss the guard rail and fall 8 metres to the ground!

Looking at the other column in photo B, the concreters are using a scissor lift. Great stuff! But on closer inspection (photo C), it appears that one of the workers is standing on the midrail. Not so great.

If you are constructing colmns and need to work at height, use appropriate height access equipment and use it correctly.

This week we feature a series of three images that highlight what not to do when your EWP is just a wee bit short.

The intrepid pair are working on equipment attached to a flying-fox type arrangement. Our contributor told us:

"When challenged as to why they felt the need to climb from the basket of a raised EWP, all these two wannabe Groucho's could offer was"

'We couldn't reach, but anyway we were only up there for a minute or two.'

"I reassured them that the time taken to fall is almost always far less than a minute or two... A rapid review of their work procedures followed, along with the ultimatum, if the job can't be done safely, it doesn't get done.

"Within ten minutes, they had re-located the EWP, which miraculously gave them that extra metre or two of height they needed."
